SMALL FOOTPRINT, MAXIMUM SPACE, NO PROBLEM FOR AN ORGANIZED METAL SHELVING SYSTEM

For Straticom, an award-winning Toronto-based interior design company, storage space was becoming a daily battle. The company’s existing resource library was overflowing with samples, files, carpet squares and more. The space they had for these supplies and resources was small and the larger-sized items were just being placed on the floor, which created a hazardous work environment. The room was accessed on a daily basis by almost everyone at the company— creating an additional concern with its current storage method. The cramped space needed to be addressed.

VERTICAL METAL SHELVING ORGANIZES SPACE

The staff at Straticom called on Spacesaver Solutions Inc. to partner with in designing a storage system to accommodate the needs of the interior design company. To maximize space in the smaller footprint, Spacesaver Solutions focused on adding vertical storage by way of extended 4-post stationary metal shelving around the perimeter of the room.

ORGANIZED AND EASY TO ACCESS SAMPLES

The metal shelving was outfitted with door and drawer add-ons to accommodate the firm’s samples. This added shelves in places where none previously existed. Large and small samples both were given very specific “homes”—and all samples were easy to access. Finish samples finally had a place of their own, and bulky samples like carpet swatches and heavy tile books were stored in special metal shelving compartments designed in relation to their height and weight.

MAXIMIZED SPACE IN SMALL FOOTPRINT

In working around the room’s perimeter and storing samples vertically, there was plenty of unused space in the middle of the room—enough for us to install a center work island. The island became a centerpiece of the firm’s collaborative meetings, and convenient metal shelving storage space was built into the island to house additional samples and work materials.

“The (Spacesaver Solutions Inc.) team was awesome to work with throughout all of our decision making processes—and there were quite a few. The installation went smoothly with minimal interruption, and they were extremely polite and professional.”

TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS SCORE UPDATED HOCKEY EQUIPMENT STORAGE

As one of the original six members of the National Hockey League, the Toronto Maple Leafs have a long team history. The team and their loyal fan base have called the Air Canada Centre their home arena since 1999, but when it came time for a renovation of the team’s equipment and locker room, the hockey equipment storage room was an afterthought.

While the new storage room looked beautiful, it was a lot smaller than their previous space. The equipment manager’s primary goal was to fit all of the team’s bulky equipment into one central area while still having easy access to the gear needed for practices, games, and workouts. The equipment manager had visited and spoken with managers of multiple other teams, and he’d seen how Spacesaver Solutions’ mobile shelving helped add storage capacity in other locker rooms and hockey equipment storage rooms.

HIGH-DENSITY MOBILE STORAGE SYSTEM FOR HOCKEY ATHLETIC EQUIPMENT

He reached out to Spacesaver Solutions Inc. to see if we could help find a way to accommodate all the uniforms, pads, helmets, skates, and over 1,500 sticks into the new smaller space. Rob McClelland, our Storage Expert has extensive experience designing athletic equipment storage systems and took a full inventory of all items that the Toronto Maple Leafs needed to store. After discussing different options for organizing the gear, Rob and the equipment manager settled on a convenient way to organize all of the items using a high density mobile storage system.

ORGANIZED SHELVING OF HOCKEY EQUIPMENT

STORAGE FOR EASE OF ACCESS

The new system eliminates static aisles to allow the Maple Leafs to use every inch of space and make the most of the confined area. Similar items are grouped on the same shelf, with separate cubbies for different sizes of shirts, uniforms, and more. Lightweight, easy-to-grab items like gloves are stocked on higher shelves, while bulkier items are kept on larger, lower shelves for easy retrieval. Dividers and bins help ensure that smaller items like socks are easily accessible while keeping them organized and secure on the shelves. Even chewing gum for the players has a designated space on the shelving system!

TORONTO MAPLE LEAF’S HOCKEY EQUIPMENT STORAGE ROOM MORE THAN JUST A FUNCTIONAL SPACE

For added security and convenience, the high density system is equipped with a priority aisle setting. When not in use, the system automatically resets itself to restrict access to certain aisles while leaving the most heavily used aisle available. And the finishing touch? Custom-made, 3D Plexiglas team logos to adorn each carriage.

With the new system in place, the Maple Leafs no longer have to worry about running out of space in their small room. When it’s time to set up for a home game or pack up for an away game, the whole process is faster and more streamlined with all items in their designated cubbies. With the added details, the hockey equipment storage room is more than just a functional space – it’s a source of pride for the entire organization.

Artwork Archival Storage In A Bank

Artwork Archival Storage In A Bank

ARCHIVAL STORAGE AND ART COLLECTION STORAGE FIND AN UNLIKELY HOME – IN A BANK

When owners and collectors of fine art travel, downsize, or simply have too large of a collection to display at one time, they have a few options for storing their pieces, including private storage units or attended art storage warehouses. One of the safest and most secure options, however, is bank vault storage. Some banks offer highly protected, climate-controlled archival storage for valuables and art.

This was the case at a bank in Ontario. As a service to its clients, the bank had a secure storage facility for art and archives in the basement of an office tower. At the original facility, small archival boxes were being stored on standard static shelving. The nuts-and-bolts construction of the shelving left few options for items that weren’t a standard size and provided very limited storage space. These constraints meant that some boxes had to be stacked on the floor, putting them at risk of water damage and exposure to dust and dirt.

WOODEN BIN SYSTEM MAKES WAY FOR A MORE SECURE AND ACCESSIBLE ARCHIVAL STORAGE SYSTEM

The fine art collection storage were being stored in large wooden bins stacked two high. When owners came to access their pieces of art, the stacking made it difficult for bank employees to locate and remove the correct piece. The repeated removal and replacement of the artwork began to cause damage to the frames and surfaces – a major issue when working with valuable works. With items of various sizes and shapes, it became difficult to use the wooden bin system at all, meaning that many pieces of art had to be moved to the floor where their only protection from water damage and dust was a plastic sheet draped over the top.

The cramped space was at capacity, which meant the bank could no longer accept more clients’ artwork.  Without an internal locking or tracking system, the valuable pieces were vulnerable to security issues. To maintain top notch customer service, as well as maintain the integrity and security of the archival storage and artwork, the bank knew it was time for a newer, more accessible storage solution.

ART COLLECTION STORAGE SECURED BY AUDIT TRAIL TOUCHPAD

The staff turned to Spacesaver Solutions to partner with them in designing a new system to accommodate the needs of the bank and the art owners. Spacesaver Solutions installed an Eclipse Powered high-density mobile storage system to house the archival storage boxes. With aisles that move at the touch of a button, the system eliminates wasted space to add much-needed capacity to the storage room.

To ensure maximum security, the system is equipped with locking Audit Trail Touchpad so that the shelves can only be accessed by authorized personnel with a PIN code. In the unlikely event that an item is misplaced, Audit Trail allows the bank to track everyone who has previously accessed the shelf using a software interface.

ART RACKS PROVIDE NEEDED SECURITY, INTEGRITY, VISIBILITY AND ADDED CAPACITY

The new archival storage system also includes a water diversion kit with rubber gaskets that cover all panel gaps. In the case of a leak or sprinkler system use, the archive boxes will stay dry and undamaged inside the shelves.

To accommodate pieces of artwork as large as 6 feet x 8 feet, Spacesaver Solutions suggested Spacesaver Art Racks. Artwork can be rearranged on the racks as needed, and the shelves slide apart to provide both added capacity and maximum visibility to help staff locate pieces.

CLIENTS CAN REST ASSURED THAT THEIR TREASURED ART COLLECTIONS AND MEMORIES ARE SAFE

With the new storage system in place, the bank is poised to provide exceptional security and customer service for clients. Employees spend less time searching for items, and with 60% more space created by the new archival storage, the work environment is much less cramped. Most important, clients can rest assured that their treasured collections and memories are safe, protected from damage, and can be quickly located when needed.

TEMPORARY EVIDENCE STORAGE GETS A SECURE OVERHAUL AT TORONTO LAW FIRM

Everyone knows that law enforcement agencies are responsible for preserving and securing thousands of pieces of evidence. However, most people never think about law firms and their responsibility for preserving the chain of custody. While law firms and litigators don’t store evidence long-term, they can hold it for short periods of time while working through their cases.

Law firms have a responsibility to ensure that evidence isn’t lost or tampered with, and are held accountable for the security of evidence to maintain the integrity of the case.

TEMPORARY EVIDENCE STORAGE FOR CONFIDENTIAL CLIENT INFORMATION

A law firm in Toronto that handles many high-profile cases needed a more secure evidence storage solution in their office. After all, if the security and integrity of their evidence was questioned, it could lead to doubts about their own integrity and weaken their cases in court. They also wanted their clients to rest assured that their confidential information was being protected properly.

COMPACT AND SECURE TEMPORARY EVIDENCE STORAGE LOCKERS

With very little space to install updated evidence storage in the law firm, they reached out to Rob McClelland at Spacesaver Solutions to see if he could help design a system that was compact and secure. Working with the law firm, Rob decided that evidence lockers were the perfect temporary evidence storage solution.

With tamper-proof locking doors and all-steel construction, the evidence lockers added a new layer of security to give the law firm and their clients peace of mind. Rather than a bank of standard lockers, the new system included multiple sizes of lockers to accommodate a variety of evidence – from files to boxes to bagged items – in a smaller space.

LAW FIRM KEEPS TRUST OF CLIENTS WITH TEMPORARY EVIDENCE LOCKERS

With the new lockers, the chain of custody control for evidence now goes through one designated employee at the law firm who deposits and removes all evidence to ensure that every item is accounted for. The doors are only accessible from one side to ensure that no evidence has been tampered with.

The law firm was so happy with the results of the first project that they installed more lockers on other floors of their office. They can now rest easy maintaining the trust of clients and the court, knowing that their evidence storage is secure, organized, and compact.

HAND CRANK COMPACT STORAGE LEADS TO ARTIFACT PRESERVATION AT CANADIAN WAR MUSEUM

The Canadian War Museum is Canada’s national museum of military history. It’s also the world’s most respected museum for studying armed conflict.

Tracing back to its origins in 1880, the museum holds more than three million artifacts from around the globe. This includes rare vehicles, medals, uniforms, artillery, personal memoirs, and 13,000 works in the Beaverbrook Collection of War Art.

For their 125th anniversary, the museum celebrated with a new facility to better store and display their collections. The new Canadian War Museum would be 440,000 square-feet and would feature artifacts ranging in size from buttons to airplanes. The ideal storage solution would need to ensure preservation and accessibility for a wide range of collections.

Custom Storage Solutions For Special Collections

Even with such a large building, maximizing storage was still a high priority. The Collections Managers knew the artifact inventory would increase, and they wanted to plan for this growth so they reached out to the Storage Experts for help.

Hand Crank Compact Storage Creates Space in the Equipment Vault

The Equipment Vault holds everything from tanks and vehicle components to cannons and munitions. To store these large, heavy items, we installed a hand crank compact storage system to maximize space.

“Without the mobile system we would have needed a room three times larger.”

Art Rack Storage for 1,300 Pieces in the Paintings Vault

We installed 90 floor-mounted, mobile art racks to store a fine art collection for over 1,300 pieces. The mobile art racks offer twice the amount of storage as traditional shelving by placing art on each side of the rack. Pieces that were too large to fit on the rack were unframed, removed, and rolled on large diameter tubes to prevent cracking. The tubes were then placed on specially designed cantilever shelving with easy access by a crane arm.

Heavy Duty Static Shelving in Secure Arms Vault

The Secure Arms Vault stores 4,000 long arms, 2,000 handguns, body armour, swords, helmets, military models, and thousands of weapons in different sizes and weight. Storing all these items needs a very customized storage solution. Our Storage Experts designed a compact mobile storage system with doors, drawers, and other features to give added protection to each artifact. Wide span shelving was also placed into a mobile system to accommodate heavier items.

Visual Storage in Dress and Insignia Vault

Inside the Dress and Insignia Vault, we installed high density mobile storage systems. These systems hold military planning toy soldiers, rolled textiles, regimental and battle flags, and other artifacts of various shapes and sizes. To securely store these artifacts in one central place, the mobile systems feature drawers, doors, and static shelving. The organization of this area is so impressive that windows were installed in the vault to let visitors get a peak behind the scenes.

Higher Security for Living History Vault

Lastly, the Living History vault is a cross-section of all the other vaults in the Museum. It requires higher security for the items inside so we designed a self-sealing system. It compresses against one wall and features a lockable end unit that complies with the Canadian Fire Arms Act.

“I keep coming back to the fact that we would have needed twice the footprint or more without the compact storage, With a good mobile system, your construction costs are down, materials are down, and building maintenance and upkeep costs are lower for many years to come.”
